While Smith Design originally specialized in finely crafted wood stairs, they have since branched out to include stairs with glass, metal, and stone. The current woodworking shop boasts a five axis CNC to assist in the construction of Smith Designs own compound curved handrails along with their original specialty of quality stairs. Smith Design commences each of its projects with raw materials and finishes with some of the most finely crafted architectural elements on the market today.

Smith Design boasts an expansive metals shop utilizing traditional blacksmithing techniques, as well as modern manufacturing and machining to fit every custom metalworking need.  From staircases and balustrades to chandeliers and entry ways, our metal smiths can do it all.  The metals shop has recently expanded to include a foundry giving its clients this added luxury.

Smith Designs manufacturing process is personalized and catered to the client’s needs.  Each item is custom built to the client’s specifications using a combination of the latest cutting edge CNC technologies as well as the care and attention to detail expected from an artisans masterpiece.  Because they oversee all of the construction, shipment, and installation, Smith Design is able to keep everything “in house” from start to finish; ensuring quality craftsmanship at each step of the project.

Our History

The vision for Smith Design was conceived nearly thirty years ago when cousins Lynn and Dee Smith opened their first custom stair shop just north of Dallas, TX.   The two started small, specializing in hand crafted stairs that they constructed themselves.  Nearly three decades later, the business has expanded to include more than twenty highly skilled craftsmen with over a century of combined experience, working out of a 30,000 square foot facility in Gunter, TX.

Some of the exquisite pieces done by Smith Design have graced the homes of such well known people as Aaron Spelling, Mark Cuban, Eva Longoria, as well as Exxon headquarters, the Utah Governor’s Mansion, several Mormon temples, and many other notable locations.  Smith Design offers a variety of custom products in a range of styles bound to suit the needs of the most discerning client.
